The Female Health Company Donates Female Condoms, to Work with CDC on Education and Training, as Part of STD Awareness Month

Company’s FC2 Female Condom Helps Prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections, Including the Zika Virus, and Unintended Pregnancy

CHICAGO, May 09, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Female Health Company (NASDAQ:FHCO) (FHC) today announced that it has donated FC2 Female Condoms to both the CDC Foundation and UNFPA and pledged education and training efforts as part of its participation in Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Awareness Month, which occurs every April.  While affecting individuals of all ages, STDs disproportionately impact youth. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that those who are between the ages of 15 and 24 make up just over one quarter of the sexually active population, but account for half of the 20 million STDs that occur in the United States every year.

This year’s STD Awareness campaign focused on two critical current medical issues: 1) the rising number of cases of STDs - chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, the first increase in STD cases since 2006; and 2) the Zika virus, a critical new threat that has been added to the STD list.

“The Female Health Company has a long history as an advocate for women with regard to their sexual health,” said O.B. Parrish, chairman and chief executive officer of The Female Health Company. “The FC2 Female Condom is a highly effective option that protects women from STDs, including the Zika virus. We are proud to donate our FC2 Female Condoms to both United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the CDC Foundation to help prevent the transmission of STDs. In addition, we intend to continue our work with the CDC and the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) to bring greater awareness of this critical health issue and provide education and training on how to use FC2 to prevent the spread of these infections.”

The company participated in the CDC Zika Action Plan Summit (ZAP Summit) on April 1st and the CDC Foundation Action Call on April 15th. The Company partnered with the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) to create a blog post and social media campaign. The blog post entitled, “Female Condom Outreach on College Campuses,” emphasizes the need for creative FC2 health programming to combat the high rates of STDs among youth and young adults. In correlation with NCSD’s existing campaign “Condoms (STILL) Work!” the Company and NCSD created a Twitter campaign for participants at the National Family Planning Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA) National Conference to increase awareness and stress the importance of dual protection against unintended pregnancy and STDs. The Annual Conference was attended by hundreds of key decision-makers and purchasers in the family planning field.

FC2 provides women a non-hormonal option for their contraception and disease prevention needs.
